How is a film about a midwife serving the poor in Indonesia relevant to Mid-Missouri, a region boasting some of the most high-tech obstetric services available to families today? Because birth is not only about technology. It is about humanity. Not just the human infant or its immediate family, but about how we weave the very fabric of our culture.
Guerrilla Midwife depicts the courage of mothers and midwives as they hold hands across barriers of language and culture, guiding us toward a reinvention of medical protocols. It is the story of a war waged gently in the belief that peace on earth begins at birth. Follow Ibu Robin Lim into the trenches of her work from Bali, where hemorrhage after childbirth is a leading cause of death, into the Tsunami disaster zone in Aceh, where her battle is fought with only one weapon: love.
Come support CNN Hero Ibu Robin Lim and her clinic Yayasan Bumi Sehat (YBS) at this exciting event and screening of award-winning documentary film Guerrilla Midwife.
Kate Besleme, born and raised in Missouri, is a doula and midwifery student working in Bangkok, Thailand who will also share her experiences working with Ibu Robin at YBS.
The feature will be preceded by a short video and presentation by Kate highlighting her experiences working in Bali as a midwifery apprentice at YBS. A Q&A will follow the screening.
Co-sponsored by Unity Rising and Columbia Area Midwives this event will be held at 6:30 pm on Sunday, September 9th at Unity of Columbia, 1600 West Broadway. The event is free and open to the public. Please note: some of the film’s mages of the tsunami and birthing may not suitable for children.
