Midwifery Care and Home Birth

The high quality, personalized and unhurried care offered by your midwife builds trust and helps facilitate a healthy and satisfying natural birth.
We begin with an interview--your chance to meet us, get your questions answered, and determine if home birth is right for you. Plan on an informative and thorough discussion lasting up to an hour. We encourage you to schedule interviews with more than one midwife so that you find the best fit. There is no fee for this initial interview.
Once you have chosen your primary midwife you will contract with her and begin care. Regularly scheduled prenatal visits last 45 to 60 minutes. Your midwife can refer you for an ultrasound or any health concerns that arise outside the scope of her practice. A home visit with your birth team will be scheduled during the last month of your pregnancy.
Interested in exploring the option of water birth? Your midwife can rent you a birthing tub and provide experienced guidance in all aspects of using the birth pool for labor and/or birth. Using warm water for labor and birth has many benefits and aids greatly in relaxation.
A birth team consisting of your primary midwife, an assistant midwife, and an apprentice (optional) will attend your labor and birth. We stay for at least two hours after birth or until you and your baby are stable and comfortably tucked into bed. If you should need to transfer your care to the hospital, your primary midwife will accompany you.
After the birth of your baby we conduct a thorough newborn exam before leaving your home. We also offer routine newborn procedures including a critical congenital heart disease screening and newborn metabolic screen at the 24 hour home visit. We perform a minimum of three to four postpartum visits and as much breastfeeding support as is needed. We provide you with the paperwork needed to register for your baby's birth certificate.
Our availability for consultation spans from the time you hire us to six weeks after the birth.

Fee Information
Fees for services vary. Please speak with the individual midwife about her fee information and financial policies. When you choose your primary midwife, you will arrange a payment schedule with her. We do not submit claims directly to insurance companies, but after the completion of your payments, we can issue you a receipt (sometimes called a super bill) which you can submit to your own insurance company. Some clients have been successful in being reimbursed for part of their fees. Paypal is also a payment option.
